AUCKLAND (Pacific Media Watch): A new Pacific profile site has been launched as part of 3News Online - with a page exclusively dedicated to Pacific issues and drawing on Pacific Media Centre coverage.

Arthur Rasmussen, a cameraman for 60 Minutes, has teamed up with colleagues to produce the new page, which publishes both original content as well as other Pacific stories published in the region.

Rasmussen, a Samoan who has worked in the industry since 1996, says he is passionate about Pacific news and hopes the new Pacific Profile will be useful for all users of the site. He says the Pacific angle will enrich the quality of news, particularly stories on Pacific issues.

"TV3 have been great, and they have respectable islands coverage, such as the Samoan independence celebrations and whenever something big happens it is usually covered," he says.

"But there are no island reporters in TV3 and we can provide a different angle, a different perspective on things."

Rasmussen says covering Pacific news such as the Advance Pasifika march involves more than "just reporting on what Pacific people want" but finding out why Pacific people feel they are being left behind and what they are trying to achieve.

Fellow Samoan news reporter for TV3's Firstline, Seinafolava Sanele Chadwick, who covered the Advance Pasifika story, is partnering with Rasmussen to compile the content for the webpage. He is the only Pacific Island reporter for 3News.

Ordinary people
Rasmussen says they are focusing on featuring Pacific people and giving them some profile.

"We're going under the radar at the moment, not really creating any news but just profiling Pacific people and we're not profiling such high profile people either," he says.

"For example, there's a Samoan pilot in PNG at the moment and we are going to get his perspective on PNG and he will send us his photos. We're going to the grass roots and getting ordinary people's perspectives.

"Today, there are two guys walking from Auckland to Wellington to highlight domestic abuse. They're doing something within the Pacific community and we're going to profile them."

Rasmussen and Chadwick are working on the page in their own time and learning as they go.

"In my work for 60 Minutes, it's full on; I travel a lot and it's hard to do other things. We're not using any resources of 60 Minutes apart from a camera that belongs to them and my own skill base. At home I write things up and cut up footage, I'm completely self-sufficient and I respect TV3 for the opportunity to do this," says Rasmussen.

"I'm so new to it, I am learning so much."

Opinion, links
The site also carries opinion articles as well as links to blogs by Pasifika people on a range of topics. Rasmussen says he is also learning from the other sources of Pacific news.

"There are not many sources for Pacific news, apart from sites like [Pacific Media Centre's] Pacific Scoop. We modelled a lot of our thinking on the way the Pacific Scoop site looks and we hope to have links to different islands so people can click and find out what is happening.

"Since dealing with Pacific Scoop and Professor David Robie we are getting there. You can see Pacific Scoop is about 50 percent of our front page at the moment."

Universities are part of an emerging investigative journalism culture
that is pushing boundaries on models of collaboration and
international inquiries, say the editors of the latest edition of
Pacific Journalism Review.

"In a time of such intense change and experimentation, journalists and
the public should be able to expect that universities will play a role
in testing new models and putting new ideas into practice," say co-
editors Professor Wendy Bacon and Associate Professor Tom Morton, both
leading investigative journalists.

In the editorial, the co-editors declare their goal to "promote a more
independent and critical culture of journalism in our region, without
which democracy cannot flourish".

They added: "This goal suggests a relationship [between journalists
and universities] much wider and more challenging than simply the
production of qualified journalists."

The edition, themed "Back to the source" and published today, features
many investigative articles and presentations from Australia, New
Zealand and the Pacific at the conference of that name hosted by the
Australian Centre for Independent Journalism (ACIJ) in Sydney last
September.

This was the second in a series of investigative journalism
conferences, following one at Auckland University of Technology in
December 2010. The next is due at Monash University in Melbourne next
year.

The journal also features two university-based investigations into
major mining operations in New Caledonia and West Papua in a new
regular section entitled "From the Frontline".

Among commentaries published are the keynote address by Robert
Rosenthal, executive director of the Centre for Investigative
Reporting at Berkeley, California, who talks about a multiplatform
approach to investigative journalism in the midst of "one of the
greatest transformations in information and technology in human
history".

Investigative journalists Richard Baker and Nick McKenzie debate their
"Dirty Money" investigation into Securency while Linton Besser and
Dylan Welch examine their "Crime Does Pay" inquiry into the NSW Crime
Commission.

Tom Morton investigates the case of Sharleen Spiteri, an HIV+ sex
worker who caused a national scandal when she appeared on television
in Australia and revealed she sometimes had unprotected sex with her
clients.

Kayt Davies examines the strategies of the independent agency West
Papua Media and the challenge of protecting sources in dangerous
places, Shailendra Singh probes investigative journalism in seven
Pacific countries and David Robie assesses controversial Pacific
investigations involving New Zealand media regulators.

In the "From the Frontline" section, Karen Abplanalp's 2011 Metro
magazine investigation into the NZ Superannuation Fund's "ethical"
investments in the giant US-owned Freeport mine in West Papua and
Nicole Gooch's Global Mail 2012 investigation into the Vale nickel
refinery at Goro, New Caledonia, are featured.

"This is an innovative initiative for a research journal combining
journalism and reflexive academic analysis," said the journal's
managing editor Professor David Robie.

Other articles include a commentary by Professor Mark Pearson
assessing the methodology of the Reporters Sans Frontières media
freedom index rankings applied to Australia, NZ and the Pacific; an
assessment of the New Zealand journalism school accreditation model by
Grant Hannis; and "anti-Māori themes" in New Zealand journalism
researched by the Whariki Research Centre at Massey University with
suggestions "toward alternative practice".

"SUSTAIN YOUR DANCE"

Pacific Dance New Zealand in partnership with Dance Aotearoa NZ and the Pacific Arts Summit proudly presents the 2012 Pacific Dance Fono - Sustain Your Dance.

For the sixth year, Pacific Dance NZ will host this significant dance fono for New Zealand based Pacific dance practitioners. This year the fono will be launched with the keynote address from World renowned dance artist and choreographer Lemi Ponifasio, NZ Arts Laureate 2011 and artistic director of Mau Dance Company.

The fono will be an opportunity to hear from speakers who are involved in the maintenance, preservation, delivery and advancement of Pacific dance practices in New Zealand. It will be presented at the AUT Univeristy Manukau Campus and feature a number of speakers including Lemi Ponifasio (Mau), Susan Jordan (Regional Manager DANZ), Makerita Urale (CNZ), Tanya Muagututi'a (Pasifika Festival) and Iosefa Enari (PDNZ). The fono also features a range of local practitioners who will contribute to the fono, they include the 2012 Pacific artist in residence Sesilia Pusiaki Tatuila, Lulu French (Pacific Muse), Terry Faleono (performance artist) as well as Ennaolla Paea (founding director of Street Dance New Zealand). This year the University of Auckland Dance Studies post graduate Pacific students Nita Latiu, Teuila Hughes and Seidah Karati will also make a presentation in response to this year's theme.

Pacific Dance New Zealand director Iosefa Enari has delivered this fono for the past 6 years. "Each fono is planned with a theme to frame the day. Given the current economic environment and the difficulties facing our current artists to keep their businesses afloat, this year's theme is apt," states Enari. "We're pleased to welcome all of this year's speakers from the emerging and established voices of our community."

This is an important event in the New Zealand dance calendar for all Pacific dance practitioners who wish to engage and network with the larger dance community. The range of academics, managers, hip hop performers, entertainers, cultural and contemporary choreographers and dancers make this year's fono an exciting opportunity to network and hear from the various sectors of dance represented in the Auckland dance landscape.

The fono is held at the Manukau Campus Conference Centre, MD Building, Level 1, AUT Manukau site, 640 Great North Road on Saturday 19 May 2012. The fono will start at 10am – 4pm.

PFF, Rarotonga, COOK ISLANDS -- Pacifica journalists in New Zealand
celebrating ten years of better networking and a space to share their
concerns have reached a regional milestone, says the Pacific Freedom
Forum.

PFF joins other regional colleagues in congratulating the Pacific
Islands Media Association, PIMA, for reaching a decade of networking
and solidarity. "Already a minority in a country which has a strong
Pacific population and is host the world's largest Polynesian centre,
a relatively small cadre of Pacific Islands journalists working in New
Zealand have come through a tough decade for journalists, let alone
New Zealand journalists and Pacific journalists. That is
inspirational," says Papua New Guinea's Titi Gabi, who chairs the
regional media freedom network.

"PFF is not even half the age of PIMA. But the concerns over keeping
professional standards in an industry facing high turnover and lack of
interest as a long term career are shared. And the networking offered
by linking with other journalists is definitely something which has
marked the development of Pacific media in recent years."

The emergence and growth of institutions such as the Auckland
University of Technology's Pacific Media Centre is helping to lead
quality tertiary training and debates for Pacific journalists in New
Zealand and the region, and continues to help boost membership and
support for PIMA, says co-chair Monica Miller of American Samoa.

"We celebrate with our Pacific colleagues this week, and look forward
to more shared efforts in future," she says.

Miller was amongst those attending the May 2011 UNESCO World Press
Freedom Day regional events in Apia, where PIMA formed part of the
inaugural membership of the Media Alliance of the Pacific. The MAP
grouping provides a common platform for the different Pacific regional
media networks to come together on issues and concerns they share,
such as media freedom and training actions. -- ENDS
