MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, July 7, 2011) – Pacific area journalists say they will go to the United Nations' human rights commission over an assault on a newspaper publisher in Vanuatu.

Marc Neil-Jones, who was assaulted by a government minister, has questioned the country's justice system and says he is considering moving elsewhere.

Vanuatu government minister Harry Iuako pleaded guilty last month to taking part in an assault against Mr Neil-Jones, publisher of the Vanuatu Daily Post.

He was fined the equivalent of $US150.

Mr Neil-Jones has described the fine as nothing but a slap on the wrist, by a judiciary too scared to put MPs offside, and said he intended to appeal.

But he has since been told the prosecutor's office has no intention of appealing against the court's decision.

The International Federation of Journalists and the Pacific Freedom Forum say the issue will be raised with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
