CHINA REASSURES SAMOA: NO STRINGS ON AID
'It's a mutual relationship'

APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, July 7, 2011) – The leadership of the People's Republic of China (PRC) has no plans of forcefully taking over Samoa.

The denial is made by Chinese Ambassador to Samoa, Zhao Weiping, who says the relationship between the two countries is merely that based on cordial bi-lateral diplomacy and mutual corporation.

He stresses that China does not assist Samoa in its development course with the intention of gaining something in return.

"It's a mutual relationship," he says, "a support where we provide help for the development of Samoa."

He says the Chinese government is assisting many other countries in the Pacific because it agreed long ago to provide help to developing countries and Samoa is one of them.

"With our rapid economic development we wanted to make some kind of contribution to other nations."

Mr Weiping said if there is worry among members of the community that this is China's intentions, there is no need for it.

The relationship between Samoa and China is that of childhood friends, he said.

With the Chinese Embassy established in the country for more than 30 years now, if this was his government's plans, it would have done that long ago.

He believes if there is a suspicion by Samoans that China plans to rule over it, the idea comes from a lack of understanding and misconceptions.

The Ambassador thinks awareness about the purpose of the ties between his government and Samoa will make people understand they just want to help.

China wants only to make more friends, he said. The idea is to create a peaceful development and mutually beneficial cooperation and harmonious co-existence - one that serves the same common interests, he said.

Although he did not have readily available figures, China has poured into the economic development of Samoa and has provided major help in building multi-million buildings around the country.
