Tonga's Princess Ashika trial jury is dismissed

Updated February 8, 2011 17:42:18

The much-awaited trial in Tonga over the sinking of the Princess Ashika ferry has stalled on the first day, with the entire jury being dismissed.

It was discovered that one of the seven jurors had a criminal conviction relating to riots in 2006 and Justice Robert Shuster decided to scrap the whole jury.

The court was set to begin hearing evidence against four people charged with manslaughter-by-negligence over the deaths of 74 people in the ferry sinking in August 2009.

The former managing director of the Shipping Corporation of Polynesia, which operated the ferry, is also facing forgery charges.

Presenter: Liam Cochrane
Speaker: Monalisa Palu, Tongan journalist
