[pima.nius] First pan Pacific exhibition at Parliament

9:48 AM |

okaioceanikart is thrilled and privileged to be the first Pacific show in the new gallery space in Parliament Feb and March

Resilience will be part of a 3 week exhibition timed to mark the Pasifika Festivals in Wellington 26 February and Auckland 12 March.

Art by okai artists resident in Japan, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea – and NZ.

The exhibition also includes touching paintings by pupils of schools hit by the 2009 Samoa Tsunami. Artist and National University of Samoa lecturer Leua Leonard set up an Art Therapy Project supported by Auckland Girls Grammar School and Reef Shipping through Michael Jones to help the children come to terms with the tsunami and its affect on their lives. Some of the work is funny, some clever and meaningful. A few look like work of artists of the future.

The Hon Georgina Te Heuheu will open the exhibition at Parliament's Bowen House exhibition space, entrance from Lambton Quay that will then be open to the public from 10am to 3pm 23 to 25 February. After then call Michelle Janse Arts Coordinator 04 817 9036 at Parliament to arrange a viewing. The exhibition runs until 18 March.

Resilience artists are: Nestor Opetaia and Mikoyan Vekula of Wellington, Steven Gwaliasi of Hokitika, Kopotama Jacobson currently residing in Japan, Leua Leonard of Samoa, Daniel Waswas of Papua New Guinea and Fatu Feu'u, Dagmar Dyck, Sylvia Marsters, Penny Howard, Cerisse Palalagi, Sale Pepe and David Teata all working in New Zealand.
