Climate change in the Pacific special: Part 1

Updated January 10, 2011 16:52:35

Staying with the topic of the weather, and for the small island states of the Pacific, climate change and the increase it is causing in sea levels, has been identified by them as the biggest threat to their existence.

They have no doubt this is a result of the world getting warmer, and they lay the blame on the carbon emissions of developed countries like Australia, China and the USA.

But what frustrates them is that despite promises to address the issue, those countries have repeatedly blocked all efforts to put in place a binding UN agreement on limiting emissions, and in 2010, at the UN climate conference in Mexico, such an agreement was delayed for another year.

Pacific Correspondent Campbell Cooney has prepared this special two part report on the Pacific's fight against climate change.

Here is part one.

Presenter: Campbell Cooney
Speakers: Lord Monckton, climate change sceptic, Enele Sopoaga, leader of Tuvalu's delegation to the Cancun climate talks
