Row over Tongan King's NZ residence labelled political

Updated November 30, 2010 17:57:29

A group of Tongan lawyers in New Zealand is vowing to press on with their attempts to prevent the King of Tonga selling his official residence in Auckland, Atalanga.

The King of Tonga's official residence in New Zealand was bought by his grandmother, Queen Salote, in 1952.

He's now trying to sell it, but a group of Tongan lawyers say the Tongan government has paid a lot of money towards the property over the years, so it's not entirely his to dispose of.

His Majesty says some of the lawyers are involved in a new political party in Tonga, and that's why they're doing this.

Presenter: Bruce Hill
Speaker: King George Tupou V of Tonga; New Zealand-based Tongan lawyer, Joel Fotu
